Annie has a story-and it's nothing short of a miracle.

In August 2024, we welcomed Annie, a 16-year-old mustang, and her precious four-and-a-half-month-old filly to our ranch. Annie came from a history of severe abuse and instability. She had been shuffled between homes-some kind, some not-but she never knew the safety of a forever family.

To everyone's surprise, Annie had quietly given birth on March 29, 2024-and no one even knew she was pregnant at the time.

Just days after arriving at Poncho's Mustang Rescue, Annie became critically ill and had to be rushed to an equine hospital, leaving her four-month-old foal in our care.

The ultrasound revealed something shocking. Annie was carrying months, possibly years, worth of sand and sludge in her digestive system. Without urgent treatment, it would be fatal. Worse still, the ultrasound showed she was pregnant again likely bred during her first heat cycle after giving birth (known as "foal heat").

So there we were: a dangerously sick mare, a fragile fetus inside her, and a young foal at home missing her mama.

The medical team began aggressive treatment: IV fluids, powerful medications, and laxatives. The vet tried to remain hopeful, but things were grim. Surgery was the only remaining option-and it was far beyond our reach as a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue already stretched thin.

We were told that if she didn't improve by the next morning, euthanasia would be the only humane option.

That night was filled with prayers and tears.

And then-a miracle.

The vet called the next morning: "Annie is responding to treatment." We were able to bring her home that night, armed with medications and a rigorous care plan. Being back with her foal seemed to lift her spirits, and slowly but surely, she began to heal.

Weeks turned into months. Against all odds, Annie recovered. The baby growing inside her held on too. And then, on April 21, 2025 at 10:23 PM, Annie gave birth to a beautiful, healthy colt we named Majestic Bud.

This is what we do at Poncho's Mustang Rescue. We give horses like Annie a second chance at life-a real one. She wasn't supposed to survive. Her unborn foal wasn't expected to make it. Yet today, we have three healthy, thriving horses, and a story of resilience and grace that we'll never forget.

But we need your help.

Annie's vet bills are still being paid off. Since then, we've cared for other sick and injured horses, and the costs continue to pile up: feed, medicine, shelter, transportation, liability insurance for our mini-stock therapy visits to assisted living facilities and hospitals-it's a lot. And most of it is coming from our own pockets.

We are a small, faith-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit, and your donations are tax-deductible.

Please consider supporting our mission:

And whether you're able to give financially or not, please share Annie's story and keep us in your prayers.

From all of us at Poncho's Mustang Rescue-thank you for standing with us and with these majestic beings we are called to love
